Een webshoptip uit de UK, Bon tot, waar ik ook wel graag bestel. Het is een toffe webshop met te gekke merkjes alweer zoals Tiny Cottons, Gray Label, Kid + Kind en veel meer. Maar ook leuk speelgoed vind je in deze hippe webshop. A webshoptip straight out of the UK. It’s a shop where I sometimes order Vince’s clothes. They have amazing brands like Tiny Cottons, Gray Label, Kid + Kind and many more. They have also toys.

 

Toen ik zwanger was in 2012 kwam het idee nadat we op zoek gingen naar leuke spullen voor de baby. We ontdekten dat er in onze eigen stad niets was dat ons kon bekoren. Dus ik ging op zoek (oftwel : ik ging shoppen) en ontdekte zo allemaal leuke onafhankelijke designers online. Ook gebruikten we al heel lang Instagram en dat zetten we ook in voor onze zoektocht. Tegen de tijd dat onze dochter ter wereld kwam hadden we onze bedrijfsnaam en kochten we een domeinnaam. Het duurde nog zeker anderhalf jaar tot het realiteit was maar we wisten wel waar we naartoe wilden groeien.

We started some early brainstorming when I was pregnant in late 2012. It was a totally new industry to us as it was our first child, and as we tended to shop independently for ourselves and our home, we wanted to do the same for our baby. We realised really quickly that our home city did not have much, if anything, to offer in the style we wanted. So I started researching (some might call this shopping!) and found this whole world of amazing independent designers online. My husband and I both were personal users of Instagram from pretty early on so we of course started using that as a tool as well. By the time we had our daughter we had registered our business name and bought a domain name. It was another year and a half before it became reality but we knew what we were going to do from that point.

 

 

We wilden iets makkelijk. Scherp maar makkelijk. We wilden 2 woorden. We waren aan het denken in de richting van gewone dingen zoals een leuk design, hoe alle kinderen goed zijn en wilden eerst iets met ‘kid’ of een versie daarvan. We wilden wel iets chiquer overkomen dus gebruikten we woorden van taken die we zelf spraken zoals Franse en Spaanse woorden. We wilden ‘good kid’ en zo kwamen we op Bon Tot. Een mix van Frans met Engels!

We wanted something simple – sharp and simple. We wanted it to be two short words. We were thinking about general things like good design, good kids, how all kids are good. We talked about wanting to use the word ‘kid’ or a version of in the name, but we wanted it to be a bit more chic. We started using words from languages that we spoke, inserting various Spanish and French words in…and ‘good kid’ suddenly and quite literally became Bon Tot. A hint of sophisticated French mixed with fun slang English.

 

We gaan niet persé voor de laatste trends maar houden van simpel design. Heel belangrijk vinden we dat er een goede balans is tussen prijs en kwaliteit van de kledij. Hopelijk maken wij, als eigenaars, de shop uniek. Ik denk ook dat onze achtergronden een grote invloed zijn: ik kom van een sportieve Amerikaanse familie dus ik hou van … kledij. Zelfs als kind trok ik me niets aan van wat anderen deden. Ik vond leuk wat ik leuk vond en maakte veel van mijn kledij zelf als ik wat ouder werd. Graham is een architect en is geobsedeerd over hoe dingen werken en details. Hij benadert dus kledij van een andere invalshoek maar we komen wel overeen in wat we leuk vinden. De prodcuten die we kiezen hebben volgens ons een goede balans tussen functie , details en plezier.

We are not trend driven. We love simple design. We love basics. We aim for a particular price point; we are really focused on trying to achieve a balance between cost and quality. Hopefully we, as owners, make the shop unique. I think our backgrounds are a huge influence: I come from a sporty, midwestern American family so I like purposeful, tough clothes. Even as a child, I was never too bothered about what everyone else was doing – I liked what I liked and made quite a few of my own clothes as I grew older. Graham is an architect and obsessed with how things work and the detail; so he approaches clothes and toys from a different place, but we tend to completely agree on what we like. I think the products we pick have a good balance of functionality, attention to detail and fun.And in terms of our bricks and mortar shop…I think our cardboard shelving fit out is pretty unique!

 

 

Natuurlijk! Wanneer je een eigen zaak hebt ben je steeds aan het brainstormen en plannen. Het eerste op de lijst is een grotere bakstenen winkel in Edinburg. We hebben alvast veel ideetjes om hem te vullen!

Of course! I think when you have your own business you are always planning and brainstorming. What will become reality is a different story! First on the list is a bigger physical shop in Edinburgh. We have lots of ideas to fill it with!

 

Me (Kristina): I used to be afraid of animals; I’m now a French Bulldog owning vegan!
Graham: He had a starring role in his high school production of Grease!
The shop: The item that inpsired our entire business was the Gray Label Mustard Sweatshirt. I had actually said out loud all I wanted for Clemence was a mustard sweatshirt. We found it and the rest is history!
